STEMpower Expands Its Impact in the Comoros: New STEM Laboratories Inaugurated at the University of Comoros

STEMpower Expands Its Impact in the Comoros: New STEM Laboratories Inaugurated at the University of Comoros Moroni, Comoros — September 23,2025— STEMpower proudly announces the successful inauguration of two state-of-the-art STEM laboratories — a Virtual Computer Lab and an Electronics Lab — at the University of Comoros (UDC). This milestone marks a historic moment in the nation’s higher education landscape, providing cutting-edge resources to empower students, faculty, and researchers. The inauguration ceremony brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Higher Education, representatives from the University of Comoros, local media, and students, reflecting the strong commitment to advancing STEM education in the country. Established in 2003, the University of Comoros (UDC) is the country’s leading public higher education institution. Its main campus is located in Mvouni, on Grande Comore Island, about 7 km from the capital city Moroni. UDC also operates campuses and centers on other islands, including Patsy in Anjouan and Fomboni/Wanani in Mohéli. The university comprises four faculties, two institutes, one school, and two regional university centers, serving around 13,000 students. Over the past two decades, UDC has graduated more than 36,000 students and remains a key driver of the country’s scientific, technical, and cultural development. University Leadership highlighted the importance of this collaboration Dr. Ibouroi Ali Tabibou, President of the University of Comoros “During the recent National Conference on the Transformation of Education – spanning preschool to higher education – one major recommendation was to encourage Comorian youth to pursue scientific fields, represented by STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Many students still favor literary studies, so it is crucial to shift this trend to meet the country’s development needs. We are thrilled to have access to these modern facilities. They provide a unique opportunity to launch our digitalization initiatives and strengthen UDC’s international profile. These laboratories are a first in the Comoros – such infrastructure has never existed before. They allow our students and staff to work in new ways and look to the future with greater ambition. I extend my sincere gratitude to the donor and to STEMpower, as well as to the technicians involved. This donation is more than equipment – it represents a new beginning, enabling us to take a significant step forward.” Aboubacar Ben Aboubacar, Deputy Director of Studies and Academic Affairs at UDC “I had the privilege of closely following the STEMpower project. The installation of the two laboratories (Virtual Computer Lab and Electronics Lab) came at exactly the right time and aligns perfectly with the university’s vision. These labs are already part of our academic planning for the upcoming year, as the University introduces new scientific and technical programs, especially in electronics. The Physics Department, which urgently needed practical equipment, can now offer students the opportunity to carry out hands-on projects. We also plan to launch new programs in medical sciences, where such equipment will be essential. We are confident that these laboratories will greatly benefit our students and, in the future, could serve secondary and primary schools across the country. We sincerely thank STEMpower and the team that installed these facilities. Their expertise, energy, and support were invaluable in strengthening the skills of our young university staff.” About STEMpower STEMpower, a pan-African charity, has been advancing STEM education across Africa for over a decade. Its mission is to provide hands-on STEM programs to secondary and pre-university students—regardless of gender or ethnicity—preparing them for advanced studies and careers in STEM. Through the establishment of STEM Centers, innovation labs, and strategic industry partnerships, STEMpower equips young people with the skills and tools they need to thrive in the modern economy and contribute to sustainable development. With offices in the USA, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Rwanda, STEMpower has established over 148 STEM Centers across Sub-Saharan Africa, with more planned for expansion. STEM Centers are specialized learning facilities that provide students with computer laboratories, technological training, and modern scientific equipment in a supportive environment. Local students can enroll in age-appropriate programs at no cost, and the centers also serve as venues for community gatherings and regional science fairs. STEMpower is now in an expansion phase and plans to reach more countries in 2025, while strengthening its operations in countries where STEM Centers are already established, including Angola, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Comoros, Congo Brazzaville, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somaliland, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Niger. 🌐 Pour en savoir plus : www.STEMpower.org
